This Friday night, Region 5 AAAAAA lights up with a highly anticipated match-up between two Eagle teams when Etowah hosts Milton – Eagles against Eagles!

Milton is very well coached by former Pope HS Asst. Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and Strength/Conditioning Coach,Tony Howie DeCristofaro (bio HERE).

Etowah Head Coach, Dave Svehla (bio HERE) has built a strong Region 5 contender and was formerly at El Paso Gridley High School in Illinois.

The Milton “Mpire” battled the Trojans of Lassiter last week and handed them a devastating loss 56 – 0, dominating every phase of the game and holding a high-powered run and pass offense to their first 0 point game!  Etowah’s “Empire” comes out of a major battle with Cherokee County rival Woodstock where they barely lost in double-overtime 47 – 44.

Both these teams have a shot at Region 5 AAAAAA.  Woodstock is 5-0 overall and atop the region at 3-0. Trailing by a half-game is Roswell, which is 2-0 in the region and one of three teams yet to play its third game. Walton, Cherokee and Etowah are all 2-1. Etowah holds a tiebreaker over Cherokee because of a head-to-head win, but it has not played Walton.

Last week Milton utilized stand-out players and to generate over 500 yards of offense against Lassiter.  Both these teams have demonstrated strong Offenses and Defenses, although Etowah allowed 47 points last week to Woodstock.

The Eagles Nest 2014 Milton High School

What a beautiful night for football and Milton High School is a beautiful venue and friendly atmosphere for fans to come out and support their teams.  The contest, however, was not so pretty.  The Trojans marched into Eagle Stadium and (for a couple of early play series) made it seem like it would be a fight!  Unfortunately, for the Trojans, it came apart quickly and they trailed 28 – 0 at the half.

Milton Celebrates #33 Micco Brisker

The Trojans were hoping to win this battle and obtain their first win of the year, but now find themselves at 0 – 5 and 0 – 3 in Region 5 AAAAAA. It was all Milton in every phase of the game, the only team this season to hold the Trojan’s high powered offense from scoring.  Milton’s dominance was demonstrated with RB #33 Micco Brisker having another stellar night, scoring on a 24-yard and 56-yard run (running through and around Lassiter tacklers) and with a great QB performance by #11 Austin McLeod (who ran and threw the ball seemingly at will), eluding pursuit and keeping plays alive with his feet.

#16 Mitchell Wasson #5 Russell Aarons

Lassiter punter #16 Mitchell Wasson had a busy night and did an amazing job under pressure when Lassiter frequently was forced to give the ball up on fourth down.  Russell Aarons, who came into this game leading Region 5 AAAAAA in passing, ran for his life most of the night and was thwarted by an interception, several dropped passes, and the lack of an efficient run game to keep the defense honest.

Lassiter loses heartbreaker to Milton

The old saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words …” sums up a heartbreaker for what is considered a very talented Trojan team.

GHSA News Online congratulates the Milton Eagles on a “Big” win and wishes the Trojans success in future games.  Rosters for both teams are provided below in support for these two great Region 5 AAAAAA teams!

If you are a fan of High School Football, you would know that at Milton they are dedicated and committed to “Building an Mpire” – a football empire.  The Milton Eagles are well on their way to doing just that!  Milton is a very good team and a loss last week to the Roswell Hornets makes them very dangerous.  Milton is very well coached by former Pope HS Asst. Head Coach, Defensive Coordinator, and Strength/Conditioning Coach, Tony Howie DeCristofaro (bio HERE).

The men of Troy “Trojans”, march into the Eagles nest tomorrow night for a conference game and are ready for battle.  Ancient history and legend places great fear on the mention of the word “Trojan” and a contest between the Eagles and the Trojans (coached by Jep Irwin bio Here) will be a close battle in the war for Regional 5 AAAAAA supremacy.

Woodstock Wins at The Frank

September 13 2014

If you listen to Woodstock Coach Brent Budde, he will say that he was proud of the way his team fought last night.  The same can be said of Lassiter Coach Jep Irwin.

The Trojans (0-4, 0-2 Region 5 AAAAAA) fell behind early, but kept fighting and cut the lead to 35-21 before halftime. Before last night, no team had scored a touchdown against the Wolverine defense (now 4-0, 2-0 Region 5AAAAAA), but River Ridge, Johns Creek and Wheeler certainly tried. River Ridge was the only one of the three to manage a touchdown, and that came on a kickoff return. The Trojans certainly spoiled that record.

Lassiter forced three Woodstock fumbles, including one on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. Lassiter turned the three turnovers into 14 points and took a 42-38 lead with 8:15 to play in the game.  Outstanding plays were made by #33 Ozi Orjioke, #25 Ben Mostellar (who recovered a fumble and ran it back for 80 yards), #48 Kory Gildea (who recovered a fumble which resulted in a TD), #8 Micah Grigsby, #85 Cole Taylor (shown above in picture provided by MDJ), #20 Mason Waters, # 2 Taz Holt, #24 Tanner Plemmons, and #42 Khari Johnson.  QB Russell Aarons excited the crowd when, after taking the snap – passed to #87 Pearson VanHorn who then threw it back to him for a TD.

The Woodstock Wolverines have a strong group of seniors led by QB, Justin Agner.  Across the board, the Wolverines executed a solid game-plan with great offensive blocking, solid running back performance, and consistent production from their receiver group.

Congrats to the Wolverines for a GREAT game and an unblemished record, joining Lassiter in an off week when they both return 9/26/14 (where Woodstock plays Etowah and Lassiter travels to Milton).

Lassiter can WIN Region 5 in 2014

August 28, 2014 EDITORIAL
Missy Koslowski, GHSA News

082814

Okay Maxwell, the AJC, Maxpreps, etc., I have watched Kell, Hillgrove, and Lassiter play this season. We have scouted the players & coaches at Walton, at Lassiter and most at Hillgrove. At GHSA News, we believe that of these three teams, Lassiter is the most talented.

There are issues, in the pre-season against North Cobb and in the first game at Hillgrove. Adjustments might have been made to both the defense and the offense (quarter-to-quarter) to win these games.

The good thing is GHSA News feels that this can be fixed, the question is – are our assumptions correct? Lassiter has a talented leader in Russell Aarons #5, a Senior. They have an amazing and talented receiver group and even more so at the running back position, with a power runner (WITH SPEED) in Grant Daniels #34, a WATER BUG runner like #20 Mason Waters, and a combination runner in #26 Oris Lawhorn.

Last week Russell Aarons completed passes to 10 different receivers. The offense is capable, but the defense has to make adjustments to stop Kell this week. This is a HUGE test for Lassiter and going into next week’s rivalry game with Walton, they need to make the aforementioned “adjustments” in REAL-TIME / not in hind-sight. The old adage, “The Best Defense is a Good Offense” is true, but a Good and Adjusting Defense gives a young talented offense a chance to win the game.

Lassiter needs to win this game! Walton has a new coach and a less-skilled (overall) roster than Lassiter. If Lassiter hosts Walton at 0 – 2 next week, it will give Walton too much confidence coming in and increase Walton’s chances of a close game or a win.

We believe that the key word for Lassiter is “ADJUSTMENT”. Lassiter has the talent to do better than last year. They need to get to the playoffs (hopefully past the first round) and on-the-way find the chemistry, player combination, and coaching nimbleness to empower this talented team.

On this team there are players who can step-up and become leaders! If they read this article, they know who they are. Step-up, don’t accept losing – encourage and inspire your teammates! Talk to your coaches, speak up on the field, support the guy next to you – “Losing cannot be acceptable to you, a talented team”.

Here are our predictions for Lassiter, knowing what we know:

DATE           VISITOR                      LINE
08-29-14      Kell                            Lassiter +3
09-05-14      Walton                      Lassiter +10
