Lassiter shows skill in loss to Hillgrove

Friday’s game between Lassiter and Hillgrove had to be seen to be appreciated and if you were not there, you missed a GREAT contest.    On an exciting first day of High School Football and a scorcher, Hillgrove won the toss and Lassiter kicked-off the season receiving the ball.

Lassiter and Hillgrove both traded possessions and on the second opportunity on offense, Russell Aarons QB #5, handed off to Grant Daniels #28 at the Lassiter 40 and the (5’8″ 200lb.) RB broke through the middle for a 60 yard touchdown untouched.  The point after was good and Lassiter led by 7.

Russell Aarons passed for 327 yards and had 29 completions out of 49 attempts with one running touchdown and a 57 yard touchdown completion to #8 Micah Grigsby.  Although Aarons had only a 59% completion average, he was dead on with his passing and was thwarted by great defensive play and several drops by receivers.

There was positive performance to be recognized outside of the score box, where #41 Thomas Donalson, #48 Kory Gildea, and #24 Tanner Plemmons had some great defensive plays.

Russell  Aarons #5 spread the ball around to 10 different receivers, most notably #87 Person VanHorn who had 5 catches for 76 yards.  Cole Taylor #85, Tyler Kay #9, and Evan Joseph #82 also had nice catches for significant yards with Mason Waters # 20 showing moves like Barry Sanders cutting and slicing through defenders.

Lassiter was only down by 6 at the half (27 – 21), but would fight hard this whole contest trailing Hillgrove 41 -21 at the end of the third quarter.  Hillgrove was held to only 6 more points in the fourth, while Lassiter battled back hard to score 14 when regulation ended with the score Hillgrove 47 Lassiter 35.

This was a scoreboard loss for the Trojans, but this young team (in their first game) showed they have talent on both sides of the ball with many weapons in both the running and passing game.  Russell Aarons showed he has the skills to lead this team and shows great promise in this, his senior season.
